Class Ceremony

You must first complete Dojo Kun & OSU before viewing this Lesson

Opening Ceremony

The class starts with the command “Seiretsu” (line up). On hearing this command students must line up as quickly as possible with the highest grades at the right-hand side of the front row. Students should then arrange themselves in order of belt rank as quickly as possible.

Once students have lined up correctly the instructor will give the command “seiza” (kneel). Everyone must sit in seiza and wait for the command to bow.

The instructor will give the command “Shinzen ni rei” (bow to the front). Students should then bow and return to seiza.

The instructor will then give the command “Mokuso” (begin meditation). Students should close their eyes and start to meditate in order to clear their mind for training.

The instructor will then give the command “Mokuso yame” (end meditation). Students should open their eyes.

Should a Kancho Soeno be present the instructor will give the command “Soeno Kancho Ni Rei” students will bow and say “Osu”.

The instructor will then give the command “Shihan, sensei, senpai, otagai ni rei” (bow to the teacher, seniors, and students). Students should then bow and return to seiza.

The instructor will then give the command “Tattekudasai” (stand up). Students should stand up in Fudo dachi and await further instruction

Closing Ceremony

The class ends with the command “Seiretsu” (line up). On hearing this command students must line up as quickly as possible with the highest grades at the right-hand side of the front row. Students should then arrange themselves in order of belt rank as quickly as possible.

Once students have lined up correctly the instructor will give the command “seiza” (kneel). Everyone must sit in seiza and wait for the command to bow.

The instructor will give the command “Shinzen ni rei” (bow to the front). Students should then bow and return to seiza.

The instructor will then give the command “Dojo kun” (Dojo Oath). The instructor recites each line of the dojo kun followed by the students.

The instructor will then give the command “Mokuso” (begin meditation). Students should close their eyes and start to meditate in order to clear their mind for training.

The instructor will then give the command “Mokuso yame” (end meditation). Students should open their eyes.

The instructor will then give the command “Shihan, sensei, Senpai, otagai arigatougozaimasita” (teacher, senior grades, fellow students thank you very much). Students should then bow and return to seiza.

The instructor will then give the command “Tattekudasai” (stand up). Students should stand up in Fudo dachi and await further instruction

The instructor will finish the class with “Thank You”.

Students shall all help in the clean-up of the Dojo floor and training area. If the Taiko drum is used, then clean up should be concurrent with it. If a formal “Clean Up” is not called, students will nevertheless tidy up the Dojo area from any loose or scattered equipment and maintain the locker and shower rooms with the same cleanliness and order.

How To Get Into Seiza

  • From Fudo Dachi
  • Place both fists on your hips and drop onto the left knee keeping it in line with the heel of your right leg.
  • Retract your right leg so that your right knee is on the floor in line with the left knee
  • Sit back on your feet keeping your spine straight. Your knees should be three fists apart
  • To stand up repeat the process in reverse by standing first on your right leg
  • Then step up with your left leg into Fudo Dachi

How To Bow From Seiza

  1. From the seiza position
  2. At the same time place both fists on the floor one to two fists in front of the knees. Bend the upper body forwards 20 to 30 degrees. Keep your head bowed to the extent that you can still see in front of you.
  3. Return both fists to the hips at the same time and straighten the spine so that you are back in the seiza position
